[Update] Free 4.5GB Extra Storage Upgrade for Dropbox Users

Edit 25/03/2012 - Box are now giving away 50GB free storage for a limited time! Get it quick here.

If you saw my blog post yesterday about how to get 5GB free Dropbox storage space upgrade, you would know that you need to upload 4.5GB of data to obtain this free upgrade.

However, there has been a way to bypass this and get the 5GB free without having to upload anywhere near that amount -

1. Copy 4GB on to an SD card, external hard drive, phone etc into a folder "DCIM/Camera"
2. Connect the SD card/phone/HDD to the computer and select "Import pirctures and videos
using Dropbox" from the Autoplay dialog box.
3. Let dropbox do its import thing (where the dropbox icon in the task bar turns into a camera).
4. Once that is finished let dropbox do its indexing (hover over dropbox icon in the task bar and you will
see it indexing the files)
5.Once dropbox has finished indexing (a window will pop up called "Camera Uploads"). Right click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar and “Pause Syncing” then delete the files in the newly created dropbox folder named “Camera Uploads”
6. Right click the Dropbox icon again and select “Resume Syncing” and I got my free 5GB without having to upload at all!

And remember, if you don't have a Dropbox account, you can sign up here.

  1. Do you think this will get fixed at some point? It seems more like an exploit than anything. But it is very much appreciated, as I just signed up for dropbox two days ago. Thanks!
